Burger King “Hacked” Google — and Got Awards for It In 2017, Burger King dropped a 15-second ad that spoke to your smart speaker literally. A worker looked into the camera and said, “Okay Google, what is the Whopper burger?” Instantly, Google Homes across the country woke up and read the Wikipedia page for the Whopper just as Burger King wanted. The catch? They’d quietly edited the page to make the burger sound irresistible. Google was furious. They quickly blocked the ad from activating devices. But Burger King wasn’t done they re-recorded the line in different voices to sneak past the block. It was cheeky, disruptive, and totally genius. Privacy advocates cringed, but marketers cheered.
