This is actually a perfect example of how patents SHOULD work. Unilever invested in the research to discover niacinamide's benefits and deserved protection to recoup that investment. Then when the patent expired, competition flourished, prices dropped, and now everyone benefits from wider access. The system worked exactly as designed - temporary monopoly encouraging innovation, followed by broader access.
