The insane $7 trillion empire of Unilever Ltd The story starts with "Lever brothers" in 1885, England In their initial days Lever brothers manufactured a Soap named "Sunlight" which quickly grew in popularity in England and it's neighbouring countries In 1888 Lever brothers entered Kolkata with their Sunlight Soap which became popular among Indians also In 1929 Lever brothers and Margarine Unie (competitor) joined their hands due to scarcity of palm oil and formed Unilever Ltd In 1931 Unilever set up its first manufacturing unit in India and called it Hindustan Vanaspati Manufacturing Company In 1934 effects of Swadeshi movement also impacted the sales of Unilever and therefore it decided to move towards local manufacturing to promote Made in India products In 1956 Unilever merged all its Indian companies and formed Hindustan Unilever Ltd (HUL) which operates globally in 190 countries and dominated the FMCG sectors By now you may have realised that HUL is not an Indian company
