They saw an opportunity to create a new category that would compete with hookahs, chewing tobacco and pipes They Implemented modern manufacturing techniques, lowering production costs and selling prices. They made sure taxes on cigarettes were relatively low. But there was a problem, that was to build distribution. That's when the British started Associating smoking with masculinity and success: Early advertisements portrayed smokers as strong, independent, and desirable figures. Also, Cigarettes were distributed to soldiers first, who then introduced the habit to local populations.
