We are the second largest cigarette market globally with a consumption of over 800billion cigarettes annually But how did cigarettes cement its place in India when hookahs, chewing tobacco and pipes had deeper penetration The British love cigarettes, in the 1880's when they entered India, they had to import cigarettes. They saw an opportunity to create a new category that would compete with hookahs, chewing tobacco and pipes They Implemented modern manufacturing techniques, lowering production costs and selling prices. They made sure taxes on cigarettes were relatively low. But there was a problem, that was to build distribution. That's when the British started Associating smoking with masculinity and success: Early advertisements portrayed smokers as strong, independent, and desirable figures. Also, Cigarettes were distributed to soldiers first, who then introduced the habit to local populations.
