Surviving in Startups: Exactly 3 years ago, I saw one of my closest friends, a senior developer, celebrate an ESOP like he had won the lottery. The startup was booming and owning a piece of the company felt thrilling. Fast forward three years and things look very different. That company never exited. The strike price was high. And those options? Just paper. And he...still stuck up in the same position! ESOPs can sound amazing but the fine print is what really matters. Vesting schedules, cliffs, buyback clauses...these decide whether you actually benefit. Remember, they can change your life, but unlike your salary they will not pay next month’s rent. They only pay if the company succeeds, and even then, the structure decides who wins. So before you say yes, pause and ask yourself: what does this equity really mean for me? In startups, ESOPs can make you wealthy or leave you wishing you had thought twice. #TheStartupManager
