Windsurf was one of the hottest AI startups in 2025. They were about to get acquired by OpenAI for around three billion dollars. The whole team was excited, the deal was almost done. Then out of nowhere, the cofounders backed out. Not only did they walk away from the deal, they left the company entirely. Hours later, they joined Google DeepMind with a small group of top engineers. The rest of the company was left in shock, with no leadership and no real answers. Employees who had been promised big payouts were suddenly in limbo. Some were crying in meetings, others just felt betrayed. Investors like Vinod Khosla were furious and called out the founders publicly for abandoning their team. A few days later, Cognition AI stepped in and bought what was left of Windsurf. They promised to take care of the remaining employees and brought some stability back. But the whole thing left the tech world shaken.
