This is a Silicon Valley-centric American viewpoint that completely ignores what's happening in emerging markets. WhatsApp, which is absolutely a horizontal network, continues to expand in Africa and parts of Asia where smartphone adoption is still growing. The 'no more billion users' claim falls apart when you look at global markets beyond the US and Europe. Not everyone lives in a subscription-saturated economy where people can afford $9.99/month for twelve different services.
