User personas are overrated busywork that consultants push to justify their fees. I've been part of three successful startups and none of us wasted time creating elaborate fictional characters. We just built products, got them in front of real users ASAP, and iterated based on actual feedback. These formal "step into their shoes" exercises often create a false sense of understanding while delaying real market validation. The most successful founders I know talk to users constantly but don't turn it into some pseudo-scientific documentation exercise.
