Came across an OpenAI billboard in Pune. For a company that didn't have a single office in India 6 months ago, they're moving fast. India became OpenAI's second-largest market without them even trying. The adoption numbers explain why they're betting big⤵️ a). 10.2 M downloads in August 2025 (4x growth YoY) b). 16% of global ChatGPT web visits come from India c). Daily engagement: 36% of Indian adults vs 34% in the US If India moved from 36% to 45% engagement (still below peak adoption), that's an extra 125M daily users. Add to that India’s macro tailwinds - - Digital rails like UPI, Aadhaar, ONDC = data-rich ecosystems. - AI workforce: 600K+ professionals (16% of global talent pool). - Policy support: $1.2B IndiaAI Mission to build compute infra. Few markets in the world can offer both demand and supply like this. That’s why OpenAI is going all-in: i). Setting up an India office in Delhi (policy + partnerships). ii). Building a gigawatt-scale data center in India (via Stargate project). iii). Partnering with schools, IITs, and educators to drive adoption (early users drive habit adoption) iv). Launching local plans (₹399/month + UPI). OpenAI is also exploring collabs with Jio to drive adoption (similar to perplexity + airtel) ⏭️Final thought: Whoever becomes the ‘default AI layer’ in India gets first dibs on user behavior signals, integrations, and the partner network. That’s asymmetric upside.

I love how Blume breaks down India's market into three layers - (a). India 1 - Roughly 10% of the population, APC income → $15K - High-spenders who drive trends in premium products and services: think Blue Tokai Coffee, Licious, Country Delight. -
