Perplexity is trying a Spotify-style model for AI content! Instead of just taking traffic away from publishers, their new browser Comet will actually pay them every time content gets used inside answers. 1) $42.5M payout pool at launch (from Comet Plus subs) 2) 80% goes to publishers 3) Payouts linked to real usage: clicks, citations, tasks Feels like a direct answer to OpenAI (licenses but no usage pay) and Google (zero payout). The big question is will this really help publishers, or turn into โmicropennies per viewโ like music streaming?
