Comet from perplexity has launched. Opan AI is also launching its own browser in few weeks. If autonomous agents start browsing for us, the ad economy collapses. No human eyes = no ad value. Web platforms will either pivot to subscriptions, shut down, or fill with bot-friendly paywalls. 🧠 "Bot-friendly paywalls" = paywalls optimized for autonomous agents, not humans. As AI agents start reading content, platforms might adapt by: 1. Charging for API/agent access Instead of showing a paywall to a human, the site detects an agent and offers a pricing tier to access structured data (like OpenAI’s browsing tool or ChatGPT plugins today). 2. Serving simplified content to bots The site skips rendering full UI/ads for bots and just serves a clean, billable version — faster for bots, profitable for platforms. 3. Differentiating human vs. agent UX Humans see rich media + ads. Bots get summarized data behind a usage meter or token wall. Example: Today: You hit a Medium paywall while reading. Future: Your AI agent gets “Article Access API — $0.01/request.” This is already happening in primitive forms (e.g., Reddit’s API changes, Twitter/X paywalling unlogged users, paywalled APIs like LinkedIn). Agentic behavior just accelerates it.
