𝗘𝗹𝗼𝗻 𝗠𝘂𝘀𝗸’𝘀 𝗕𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝘁 𝗮 $𝟯𝟬𝟬𝗠+ 𝗘𝗺𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗲—𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝗡𝗼 𝗢𝗻𝗲 𝗧𝗮𝗹𝗸𝘀 𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗛𝗶𝗺 In 1995, two brothers from South Africa started a company that sold for $307 million. One became the world’s richest man—𝐄𝐥𝐨𝐧 𝐌𝐮𝐬𝐤. The other? He’s changing 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐰𝐞 𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐰 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐞𝐚𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐨𝐝. This is the story of 𝐊𝐢𝐦𝐛𝐚𝐥 𝐌𝐮𝐬𝐤, Elon’s lesser-known brother. 𝗔 𝗧𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝘁 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 Kimbal and Elon grew up in South Africa, in a home that was both privileged and tough. At school, 𝐄𝐥𝐨𝐧 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐛𝐫𝐮𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐛𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐧—so badly that Kimbal thought he might die. "He had obviously upset them, but nothing that justified beating someone to death," Kimbal later said. Instead of breaking them, these struggles made them 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐝𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐝. 𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗦𝗹𝗲𝗲𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻 𝗮𝗻 𝗢𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗮 $𝟯𝟬𝟳𝗠 𝗘𝘅𝗶𝘁 In 1995, Kimbal and Elon launched 𝐙𝐢𝐩𝟐, a company that helped newspapers move online. They were so broke they slept in their office and showered at the YMCA. They worked day and night, believing in the power of the internet. By 𝟏𝟗𝟗𝟗, 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐪 𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐙𝐢𝐩𝟐 𝐟𝐨𝐫 $𝟑𝟎𝟕 𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐧. Elon used his money to start 𝐗.𝐜𝐨𝐦 (𝐰𝐡𝐢𝐜𝐡 𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐏𝐚𝐲𝐏𝐚𝐥). Kimbal? He took a 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐲 𝐝𝐢𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐡. 𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵 𝘁𝗼 𝗙𝗼𝗼𝗱 While Elon focused on 𝐬𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐲, Kimbal became passionate about 𝐟𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐬𝐞𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲. In 2001, he enrolled in culinary school to learn about food from the ground up. By 2004, he started 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐊𝐢𝐭𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐆𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐩, focusing on healthy, locally sourced food. But he wanted to do more than just run restaurants. • 𝐁𝐢𝐠 𝐆𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐧 – Built 640+ school gardens, helping 350,000+ kids grow fresh food. • 𝐒𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐑𝐨𝐨𝐭𝐬 – Created high-tech urban farms inside shipping containers, using 95% less water than traditional farming. 𝗧𝘄𝗼 𝗕𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘀, 𝗧𝘄𝗼 𝗠𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 Elon wants to 𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐳𝐞 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐬. Kimbal wants to 𝐟𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐞𝐭. While Elon 𝐭𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐭𝐬 𝐛𝐨𝐥𝐝 𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐚𝐬, Kimbal 𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐬 𝐤𝐢𝐝𝐬 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐨 𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐰 𝐟𝐨𝐨𝐝. Yet, at their core, both brothers share a common goal: 𝐒𝐨𝐥𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐛𝐢𝐠 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐛𝐥𝐞𝐦𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩. As Kimbal says: "Whether it's cars, rockets, or food, we both want to build a better future."
