Co-Build a VC Fund in Public: Day 11 (getting the best out of your team!) “Your work is shit” -- is a controversial line to say — but Steve Jobs was known for his no-nonsense approach to leadership. It is a controversial approach but I agree with it. Most founders face challenges with respect to managing their superstar team or getting the best performance out of their team on a regular basis. Jobs believed that people who are really good at their job, are fully aware of it. There is no need to sugarcoat it to please them. The real ones know their worth and what matters is the quality of their work and how they contribute to the organisation’s success. The challenge is with the potential performers who have much more in them, but deliver inconsistent performance or consistently underperform. The best thing a leader can do for his team is to remind them that there is always room for growth and improvement. Undoubtedly, this approach may not be popular with everyone, but I am sure many people appreciate such raw advice. It is a reminder that sometimes the best feedback is not what satisfies us, but it is the one that motivates us. In my opinion, as founders, we must be brutally honest, towards our team and ourselves. Life is not always about being perfect, it is also about constant improvement. This honesty regarding individual team member's performance will help bring the best out of each member of the team. The intention should not be to ridicule them but to showcase the gap between what is expected and what is delivered, and help push them to the next level. What is the best way to provide bad feedback?
