We all know the drill with "Manager Mode"-hire great people, give them space, and manage through layers. It’s the classic approach, polished and perfected in business schools. But here’s the catch: it often leaves room for what I like to call “professional fakers”—people who excel at managing up but might not actually drive the company forward. "Founder Mode"? Now that’s a whole different beast. It’s raw, it’s hands-on, and it breaks the so-called rules. You’re not just engaging with direct reports; you’re in the trenches, holding skip-level meetings, and sometimes challenging the very structure you’ve built. Think Steve Jobs-having those intense retreats with the top 100 at Apple, ensuring the company’s pulse was felt at every level. Founders are often told to "step back" and "let the professionals handle it." But here’s the thing: many VCs or executives without founding experience might not truly understand what it takes to lead from the front, especially when it’s your vision.
