Basically when Amazon was just starting they started with selling books for that they use to get request (order) from client who wanted to make a purchase of a book. Amazon use to contact distributor and place the order of book which buyer wants to buy but distributors generally works as wholsale and so they had minimum order set for 10 books. Amazon cleverly use to order one book which buyers requested and 9 book which was "Lichens of north america" which used to be always out of stock. Amazon place order and recived one book with apology letter that other 9 books are currently out of stock and this way Amazon keeps functioning.
