Hack Used By Startup #6 How 'One Book' Saved Amazon in Its Early Days!! The Problem: When Amazon was starting out, they had a problem with book distributors. These distributors said retailers like Amazon had to buy at least 10 copies of each book. The Trick: To get around this rule, Amazon came up with a smart plan. They ordered just one copy of the book they really wanted to sell. Then, they added nine copies of a weird book called "Lichens of North America." Why "Lichens of North America"? This book was hardly ever in demand. So, it was always out of stock. This meant Amazon could meet the distributor's rule while still getting the books they wanted. What Happened? By using this trick, Amazon could offer a big range of books to customers. It showed how clever and determined Amazon was, and it helped them become the huge online store we know today.
