This is the major problem in lot of the startups. Founders and CEOs are investing lots of their money and until they make their company profitable, they are in a constant urge to show the world that they are not losers. It's a mental pressure for them and they are tranfering it to the employees which is not fair. What you can do is have a discussion with him, express him what you feel and try to understand his side of justifications and the reasons for this over ruling, try to give an alternative idea to get the work done in better way without harming anyone mentally. Understand he'll also be having equal mental pressure because of various factors. So try to be a friend who understands his problem and gives better solution. This will help both of you to grow. Better avoid trying to gang up and talk against him in meetings which may make him more worse. Instead prefer having one on one discussion with him and try to understand his pressures. Give alternate and better solutions

Think from his perspective to calm yourself down and think why do you think he's taken this step. Second remember you get paid for the work and third what you can do after keeping these two things in mind is maybe have a conversation about it with all your colleagues and collectively think of how to approach the CEO for the same if you guys feel that way. Maybe you could talk to the CEO and inform him how most of you feel this way and come up with something better. Always make sure to have an alternative solution for his problem as well in case he doesn't understand and doesn't agree to all of your voices.

This is just the natural evolution of employers treating their people as expendable resources to be monitored and controlled. Unity and collective action may be required to rein in these surveillance dominated tendencies.

This is exactly why I could never work at a small startup - the founders have too much unchecked power. At least big companies have HR policies preventing this kind of insane micromanagement.

Unfortunately, this kind of thing is becoming more common in startups where the CEO has an overblown sense of control. It's like they forget we're humans and not just productivity machines. I'd suggest documenting everything and having a collective meeting with him to express your concerns. If things don't change, it might be time to look for a new job where you're treated with respect.

Feel so tempted to the play devil's advocate - if this is a bootstrapped startup, the CEO is quite literally spending their own money and has a right to ensure it's not being wasted. Not saying cameras are the solution, but the intent is understandable.

That's a massive overreach of authority and invasion of privacy. Unless you're handling highly sensitive data, that level of micromanagement through surveillance is unacceptable. I'd start looking for a new job ASAP - that CEO has some serious control issues.
