"The origins of Slack- A multi-billion dollar pivot" (Saturday Startup Nugget Story -4): In 2009, Stewart Butterfield and his team were working on a gaming startup called Tiny Speck. As they built an online game called Glitch, they faced communication challenges. The team created an internal messaging tool to enhance collaboration. Interestingly, this tool became more fascinating than the game itself. Recognizing its potential, Butterfield decided to pivot. In 2013, Tiny Speck officially launched the tool as a standalone product named "Slack." The platform's intuitive interface, threaded conversations, and integration capabilities quickly garnered attention. Slack revolutionized workplace communication, evolving from a gaming company's internal solution to a global business communication powerhouse. Slack's pivot goes to show that we often start with a vision which eventually might not materialise. Be open to ideas and be real to yourself. Most startups pivot and it's okay. Pivots have resulted in multi-billion dollar companies of which Slack is just one example.
