Why the Advice Persists (Even Though It’s Garbage) So, if “follow your passion” is so misleading, why does it keep getting recycled? Because it sells, it’s easy. It’s sexy. It gives people hope. If you’re a bestselling author or motivational speaker, you’re not going to stand on stage and say, “Work really hard for ten years, fail a bunch, build skills that people actually need, and maybe—just maybe—you’ll enjoy it.” That’s not exactly a standing-ovation line. Instead, they spin it: “Follow your passion.” Boom. Cue applause. Cue Instagram quotes. Cue dopamine hit.
