The North Star Rule: Using Metrics to Show Direction I have always had this habit of creating my own rules and testing them internally before sharing them publicly. One rule I developed recently has changed how I look at metrics in startups. Most startups rely heavily on dashboards and reports. They track every task, every hour, every output. On paper it looks like control. In reality, the numbers rarely tell the full story. They show what happened, but not why productivity is slipping or where the team is getting stuck. Thatโs where the North Star Rule comes in. I treat metrics as a compass, not a report card. They guide decisions, uncover friction, and highlight the path forward, not just record history. And I like to combine this approach with agentic AI. It does more than analyze numbers. It spots recurring bottlenecks, highlights which tasks are stuck, and shows where priorities are being ignored. It uncovers the hidden patterns humans often miss and surfaces the real blockers so I can act before small issues become big ones. The result is clarity in chaos, alignment across the team, and productivity you can actually trust. Metrics and AI together do not just show the numbers. They reveal the story behind the work and make every decision feel obvious.
