Reading a fascinating breakdown today left me both surprised. Here are the points that really stood out: -> Every +1ºC cuts GDP per capita by 8.5%. Temperature alone explains 23% of global income gaps. -> In poorer countries, +1ºC slows growth by 1.3%. Even within the same country, hotter regions produce 1.2–2% less GDP. -> Labor output drops 4% for every degree above 27ºC. A 10ºC rise can slash productivity by ~35%. -> Heat doesn’t just affect work. It lowers memory, decision-making, and test performance. Even politicians give simpler speeches on hotter days. -> Geography sets tough trade-offs: -> Lowlands = more disease, but better trade access. -> Highlands = healthier climate, but costly transport and weaker economies. Development isn’t shaped only by history or policy. Sometimes, it’s quite literally about temperature, altitude, and disease. I found this strangely eye-opening today.
