On 28th July, 2025, Microsoft abruptly terminated services to Nayara Energy, a major Indian oil refinery, without prior notice. This action was taken under the European Union’s 18th sanctions package against Russian-backed entities. Nayara has 49% stake from Russia’s Rosneft. But what happened next will not only shock you but make you feel proud as an Indian. Within hours, an Indian IT firm Rediff, provided alternate solutions by providing same services, that too at cheaper cost. If this made you happy. Hold, read the entire post and it will make you even more happier. But before that, it is important to understand that Microsoft is a US-based company operating in India, and not legally bound to follow EU sanctions within Indian jurisdiction. This raises a serious issue, should foreign companies operating in India obey India’s laws or foreign (EU/US) sanctions? Nayara took an aggressive step and filed a petition in Delhi High Court, accusing Microsoft of: 1. Violating Indian laws by enforcing EU sanctions in India. 2. Disrupting critical IT services like Outlook and Microsoft Teams without warning. 3. Ignoring consumer rights and compromising India's energy sector operations. After this Microsoft, restored the services of Nayara. That too within hours. However, this incident reveals the vulnerability of India’s critical sectors like energy, banking, and defense, which are heavily reliant on Western software platforms. But this also tells the world that there are a huge availability of Indian based alternative, that too at cheaper rest. As an Indian, I appeal every corporate business holder to start using Indian based tech and services as much as possible. I also want to request to Indian courts to send a strong legal message against such crook foreign companies, who are operating in India.
