𝗠𝗶𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗲𝗹 𝗗𝗲𝗹𝗹, 𝗳𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗗𝗲𝗹𝗹, 𝘀𝗮𝘆𝘀: "Early in their careers, employees care most about pay and stability, but as they grow into leadership, they look for meaning and purpose too." In his book Play Nice But Win, he connects this to psychologist Abraham Maslow’s hierarchy of human needs and shows how it plays out in corporate life. But this was written years ago, so is it still true in 2025? 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗱. Today, employees expect more than just perks or slogans. They want real security, real freedom, and real trust, not just fancy words. 𝗙𝗹𝗲𝘅𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗮 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱. Remote and hybrid work are non-negotiable for many today. For a lot of employees, control over time and location is now as important as salary. Freedom now sits somewhere between safety and belonging. 𝗣𝘂𝗿𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀, 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲. Many employees still want meaningful work, but they can see through fake missions. They expect transparent leadership and real action, not empty slogans. 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝘅𝗶𝗲𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗔𝗜 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝘂𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. Many workers fear being replaced, so continuous learning has become part of feeling secure. Companies that focus on upskilling won’t just lower attrition, they’ll help employees survive and grow. So, what does an employee care about today? • Fair pay • Stability & security • Freedom & flexibility • Upskilling • Real culture & trust • Meaningful impact If you’re an employee, what do you expect in 2025? If you’re an employer, are you meeting those needs?

When you expect your employees to act like adults, they generally do. If you treat them like children, then get ready for your company to turn into one big Barney episode.
