Started from a village in Bangalore and built a hospital chain worth 3320 CR. 1. Born in a village near Bengaluru, Dr Kishore Kumar made everyone proud when he earned his fellowship in Neonatal ICU in Australia and his MBA in Healthcare Delivery from Harvard. During these 18 years, he also received a national award in Mysore for saving a 780-gram premature infant. But he noticed something. 🤔 2. There was a disparity in maternal and infant mortality rates between the US (3.98 deaths per 1000 live births) and India (6.87 deaths). Dr Kumar believed that pregnancy was a wellness, not an illness, and decided to visit his homeland, India, in 2005. 👇 3. He wanted to establish a chain of hospitals focused on women and babies, aiming to replicate Western standards of maternity care. In 2007, with small savings and a team that included his wife and engineer-turned-entrepreneur Rohit M.A., he established Kids Clinic India. The brand Cloudnine was born. 🚀 4. The first Cloudnine hospital opened in Jayanagar, Bangalore, and the model was clear ⏩ Premium services for a Premium Price. It offered integrated care from fertility support to postnatal follow-up, including advanced labour suites and a level-3 neonatal ICU. 🙌 5. However, challenges arose - lower-than-expected patient volumes and high staffing needs. Dr Kumar thought of an idea - Why not allow fathers in delivery rooms and set up colourful play areas? And the idea worked. ✅ 6. It achieved a 0% maternal mortality rate and a 99.72% survival rate for babies across 16,000 deliveries. By 2013, Cloudnine had seven hospitals in Bangalore, including Malleshwaram, Old Airport Road, Bellandur, and Whitefield. It raised 100 CR from Sequoia Capital. 💰 7. With capital, it expanded to Chennai, Mumbai, and Pune, with some out-of-the-box campaigns like - Just Kidding" parenting magazine, "Masters in Baby Affairs" courses and "It's Our Baby" patient app. It had broken the traditional hospital norms and commanded Rs 60,000 per delivery when the market rate was Rs 30,000. 🙌 8. By 2016, Cloudnine was handling 750 births per month across 12 hospitals. It implemented newborn screening programs from day one and routine on-site neonatal hearing screenings to international benchmarks. It was clocking a revenue of 150 CR and raised 400 CR from True North. It became a 1300 CR company. 📈 9. Even COVID-19 could not stop them, as Cloudnine partnered with Ola for dedicated patient transport. It also implemented extensive telehealth consultations and set up electronic monitoring for expectant mothers at home. By 2023, it was clocking revenues of 958 CR and became worth 2,860 CR. 💸 10. Today, Cloudnine operates 40 hospitals across India and has delivered over 2 lakh babies in 13 cities of India. Clocking a revenue of 1200 CR, it is worth 3320 CR today. 💪 ➡️Dr Kishore Kumar's work has gone global, but he continues to save over 1 lakh Indian mothers with a 0% infant mortality rate to date. 🙏
