Came back from US, had a downfall, created a 50,000 CR Hospital. 1. Born into a family that already had entrepreneurship etched into its DNA, Shivinder Mohan Singh had a lot to prove. His father, Parvinder Singh, took Ranbaxy Laboratories to global pharmaceutical prominence. But he wanted to leave his legacy and create something of his own. 🙌 2. 2001, he returned from the US and teamed up with his brother (Malvinder). They opened a single hospital in Mohali, Punjab, to create a network of modern hospitals focused on patient-centric services, cutting-edge infrastructure, and transparent operations. Fortis Healthcare was born. 🚀 3. Shivinder started, but there were many challenges. Getting doctors to leave government institutions or private clinics was difficult. Moreover, competitors like Apollo opened up 50 hospitals. Regulatory clearances for land, medical equipment, and licenses added more complexity. He had to come up with a plan. 🤔 4. He positioned Fortis as a high-end, speciality-focused hospital group that offered hotel-like rooms, concierge services, and personalized care protocols that were rare at the time. And the idea worked. By 2007, Fortis scaled to 1580 beds across 12 hospitals, 15 satellite and heart centres, and a revenue of 230 CR, and the big moment came. 👇 5. On 9th May 2007, Fortis went public with a 496 CR IPO that oversubscribed by 2.78 times as it became a 2000 CR company. By 2010, Fortis had over 50 hospitals across India. As its Revenue soared to 1,500 crore by 2011, Fortis became the second-largest hospital chain in India. 💪 6. But things took a dramatic turn in 2013. After selling their family stake in Ranbaxy to Daiichi Sankyo for $2.4 billion, the Singh brothers diverted 400 CR into unrelated areas like Religare (financial services). By 2017, a series of corporate governance lapses surfaced. Investors lost confidence, and the stock crashed. 📉 7. But Shivinder was determined to save his dream. In 2018, after intense bidding, Malaysia's IHH Healthcare Berhad acquired a controlling 31% stake in Fortis Healthcare for Rs 4000 CR. Both the brothers got removed. Under the new management, Fortis began rebuilding credibility. ✅ 8. Today, Fortis Healthcare operates over 27 hospitals and 400 diagnostic centres across India, with annual Revenue crossing 6,000 CR. It continues to be No 1. ➡️Whether you hate Shivinder Mohan Singh or love his initial hustle, you have to hand it to him for creating the most valued private-sector hospital in India. But his one small mistake of greed led him to his downfall. That is all that mattered!
