People really need to understand the scale and influence of Samsung within Korea. At its peak, Samsung Group made up something like 20-25% of South Korea's entire GDP! Imagine if Apple, Microsoft, Boeing, Prudential Insurance, and major construction firms were all one company, that's basically Samsung's position in Korea. This concentration of economic power gives them enormous political influence, which creates a vicious cycle where policies favor large conglomerates at the expense of smaller businesses and startups. This is why Korea has struggled to develop a vibrant startup ecosystem comparable to the US or even China despite having incredible technical talent and infrastructure.
