“Build something useful. Not something big.” Just finished reading Anything You Want by Derek Sivers—and it’s a solid read. No motivational fluff. Just clean, straight-up stories from someone who actually built something real (CD Baby), made millions, and gave it away like it was pocket change. Here are some things that hit me hard (and honestly, I feel more founders need to hear this): Business isn’t about chasing money. It’s about helping people. Money’s just the side effect of solving a real problem well. You don’t need a 5-year plan to start. He just fixed a small problem for some friends & himself, kept improving it, and boom—business. No mission decks, no “let’s raise seed” mindset. Just doing the work. You can make your own rules. No meetings? No investors? Fully async team? Do your thing—as long as it helps you actually serve people better. Customers don’t care about your grand vision. They care about whether your product works today. A lot of folks forget this while chasing unicorn dreams. If it doesn’t fit, skip it. Not every opportunity is worth chasing. Stay focused. Shiny distractions are still distractions. The book’s basically a reminder that it’s 100% okay to build something small and niche, as long as it’s genuinely useful. So if you’re building something right now—don’t stress about being the “next big thing.” Focus on being the right thing for a small group of people. That’s where the magic starts. Anyway, big fan of this book. Super chill read. If you’ve read it—or are building something cool—drop it here. Would love to check it out.
