This Indian startup is building OpenAI for India! Meet Sarvam AI, an AI startup founded by Vivek and Pratyush in 2023. Their goal was to build AI models for India. With this thought, they launched Sarvam AI and raised $41 million from Lightspeed and Peak XY (Sequoia) to support it. Their first product was Shuka 1.0 — an open-source speech-to-text tool for Indian languages. This was followed by the launch of Sarvam 2B in Feb 2024, an open-source LLM with 2.53B parameters, trained on Indian languages. And then they launched Sarvam Agents, basically AI on WhatsApp. This is what businesses can use to offer instant customer service in 10 Indian languages. Along with these, they also offer other basic AI tools like Text-to-Speech, Translation, Image & Document Parsing, etc. They also have a legal AI tool, which can be used by lawyers to get answers, draft, and make changes to legal notices and more. And they’ve achieved all this in just the last 1.5 years. So the performance is great! Not as good as some smaller AI startups like DeepSeek, but still seems solid imo. What do you think?
