India Taps Sarvam AI to Build First Homegrown Language Model Under ₹10,000 Cr AI Mission In a major boost to India’s AI ambitions, Bengaluru-based startup Sarvam AI has been chosen by the Ministry of Electronics and IT to build India’s first sovereign large language model (LLM) under the ₹10,000 crore IndiaAI Mission. Founded in 2023 by Vivek Raghavan and Pratyush Kumar, Sarvam AI focuses on creating LLMs rooted in Indian languages and culture. The startup will receive access to over 4,000 Nvidia H100 GPUs for 6 months to train a 70-billion-parameter multimodal model designed for Indian use cases including voice-based tasks and multilingual fluency. Sarvam has previously released Sarvam 2B, an Indic LLM, and Shuka 1.0, India’s first open-source audio model. Collaborations with UIDAI and Microsoft further strengthen its mission to make AI accessible to all. This marks a key step in India’s goal to develop indigenous, inclusive AI for global impact. 👑🌝
