Co-Building a VC Fund in Public: Day 20 (Co-building through storytelling) Aren’t we all in the business of storytelling? Maybe the successful entrepreneurs are the best new-age storytellers. In today’s world, the term ‘data-driven’ has become an omnipresent mantra. Numbers and statistics guide decisions, offer clarity, and create a sense of control in a world teeming with uncertainties. I have been a numbers man all my life and I too, find comfort in data—it provides the solid ground upon which strategies can be built. However, living in a world of internet-induced abundance, can a product be mounted solely on numbers? Having spoken to and co-built with a gazillion founders, I think not. Do not get me wrong! As a numbers man, a data-driven approach makes decision-making feel calculated rather than impulsive. But, relying on data alone often feels incomplete, leaving a void that numbers cannot fill. The feeling can be summed up in: 1. The need for ‘something more’ In my experience, the startups that truly resonate have one thing in common: an honest, compelling story. Something that never fails to leave a mark. What often gives the product an edge is a narrative that: -Anchored in a genesis: Where the journey began and the vision that propelled it forward -Embodies ‘Soft Power’: A brand’s ability to influence and endure, through resonance and relatability - A quest for meaning: Stories that transform startups into personal experiences, making them memorable and enduring 2. The dual purpose of storytelling The impact of storytelling extends far beyond marketing. Its role is twofold: -Alignment for teams: A narrative becomes the mode through which teams find a purpose, creating a shared vision that motivates them -Showcasing vision and potential: A powerful story conveys the conviction and potential behind an idea, making its value clear and compelling 3. A reflection on narratives A powerful story captures the effort behind building something extraordinary, something distinguishable amid all the noise. It mirrors the human experience, making startups relatable and unforgettable As I write this, I find myself pondering on our story (yes, my team has equal claims on that as I). A story waiting to be told, but that's for another day For today, this is about the role of storytelling in shaping resilient brands, aligning teams, and connecting ideas to action. And for now, which brands do you think have done a great job in crafting its story? We continue to invest and co-build companies at Ortella Global Capital - OG Capital, India's only fund that co-builds companies with Gaurav Verma and Rajvardhan Mohite #ortellaglobal #ortella #ortellaglobalcapital #ogcapital #cobuilding
