Co-building in Public: Day 19 (AI can’t feel, but we do) You will know what I am talking about if you are an active internet scroller. The internet is going crazy with the Ghibli-style AI portraits, turning ordinary, everyday moments into something out of Spirited Away or My Neighbour Totoro. Amidst all this, an old clip has resurfaced. The clip is of Hayao Miyazaki, the legendary filmmaker and co-founder of Studio Ghibli, who had expressed his deep frustration with AI-generated animation. He went as far as calling it an “insult to life itself”. Being an experienced animator, he strongly feels that animation is meant to capture real emotions and the soul of human existence. Something in his eyes that AI could never replicate. And yet, here we are, hopping on the trend, creating and sharing Ghibli art. I do not think that we are constantly creating and sharing because we are happy about advancements in AI or the fact that AI can replace Miyazaki’s genius, but because we are excited because his art has shaped many childhoods, it has shaped mine. We grew up watching Chihiro find her way back home, Ashitaka connecting with nature, and Totoro standing in the rain. Studio Ghibli is not just a mere animation studio, it reflects our childhood emotions. A world we had always dreamed of being a part of - almost all our childhood. And now it is finally happening. Ghibli is the language of love, nostalgia, belonging, and home. The home that we will keep coming back to, even when we grow old. So, whether it is drawn by hand or generated by a machine, I think that is the most beautiful tribute we could ever give. Do you feel nostagic?
