Co-building in Public: Day 16 (Investing in people, not just startups) We need help. Venture Capital funds are relatively small and high-intensity teams. At OG Capital, we operate in a different league. Building companies are hard and here we are, building multiple companies. We move fast, hustle hard, and spend most of the time co-building with our founders, helping them scale, and ensuring that their teams are built for the long run. But it is ironic, that VCs have some of the highest employee turnover rates in the industry. Take a look at this: The number of investors at the 500 largest US VC firms grew by 77% from 2017 to the end of 2022, suggesting a rapid expansion. On the other side, in the last 15 months, that growth has stalled at just 2%, alerting of a slowdown in hiring and a rise in employee turnover. But I also do get the reason why. The exhaustively long hours, the constant deal flow, the pressure to find the next big thing and the funding winter! Although it is thrilling, it does take a toll on you. Most VC firms do not invest much in employee retention because, well... we are not structured like big corporations. We do not have the luxury of large HR teams or intricate employee benefit programs. So, shall we just accept high attrition as the norm? I do not think so. There is enough data out there to prove that the teams who feel secure (physically, mentally, and financially) tend to perform better, stay longer, and contribute more. Once someone joins us, they are part of the OG family. We are there for them in good times and in bad, in sickness and in health. So when we build the team, we spend a disproportionate amount of time with our potential colleagues, to check for culture fit, and align interests and goals. We are not hiring people but we are adding to the OG family. So on that note, this is where we need help: a. We are looking to provide comprehensive corporate insurance to every member of our OG family and their extended family, not just because it is a perk but because it is a necessity. Can you help us guide towards those insurance providers, who have the highest claim ratio b. We continue to add to our team - more details in the link below c. We would love to know what more you are doing to build and retain a team of rockstars? Do you know any strategies that can keep teams together for the long run? If we can spend our time ensuring founders build great companies, we should also ensure that we are building a sustainable team for ourselves. And we need your help. Let us rethink how teams are built, starting from the core. Because great funds are built on people, not just on capital. Would love to hear your thoughts on this! We continue to invest and co-build companies at Ortella Global Capital - OG Capital, India's only fund that co-builds companies with Gaurav Verma and Rajvardhan Mohite #ortella #ortellaglobal #ortellaglobalcapital #ogcapital #cobuilding
