How Third Wave Coffee Became India’s Leading Coffee Chain Despite India being among the top 10 producers of coffee, most of the coffee was exported instead of being consumed in India. This fact bothered Sushant Goel, Ayush Bathwal, and Anirudh Sharma, and thus they started Third Wave Coffee in 2016. Their idea was simple! Make coffee mainstream in India by sourcing high-quality beans locally and roasting them in-house. They started by opening their first café in Koramangala, Bengaluru, and launched a second outlet within 15 months. By 2019, they had 10 outlets and secured their first investment. And then, their growth skyrocketed when they were opening a new café every 45 days—until COVID slowed things down. But they made a comeback post-pandemic! First, they raised a $6M round, doubled down on outlet openings, and, most importantly, focused on the user experience. Though this couldn’t have been possible without their referral program, premium coffee, and the amazing customer experience. Thus, today they do 241 crore in sales compared to Starbucks' 1,218 crore and CCD’s 966 crore and are available across 90+ outlets.
