Comes from a middle-class family—father was a businessman, mother and a housewife. Studied at Holy Child Auxilium School, Delhi. Pursued higher education at Delhi University (controversy over her degree). Moved to Mumbai with dreams of entering the entertainment industry. Worked as a waitress at McDonald's to support herself. Participated in Miss India 1998, but did not win. 2000: Cast as Tulsi Virani in Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi. Became a household name across India due to the show’s immense success. Won multiple awards for her performance. Also acted in other serials and reality shows. 2003: Joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Appointed Vice President of BJP’s Maharashtra Youth Wing. 2004: Contested Lok Sabha elections from Chandni Chowk against Kapil Sibal (lost). 2011: Became National President of BJP Mahila Morcha (Women’s Wing). 2014: Contested Lok Sabha elections from Amethi against Rahul Gandhi (lost). Despite losing, made significant gains against Rahul Gandhi. 2014: Appointed Union Minister for Human Resource Development (HRD) in Modi’s government. Launched initiatives like National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF). Faced controversies, including Rohith Vemula suicide case and JNU protests. 2016: Transferred to Ministry of Textiles. 2019: Contested from Amethi again and defeated Rahul Gandhi, ending Congress' stronghold. Given an additional charge of the Ministry of Women and Child Development. Introduced various women empowerment and child welfare programs. Expanded her career into business; co-owns Udyan Tea, an Assam-based tea business. Married to Zubin Irani, a businessman, and has three children. Balances political, entrepreneurial, and public life successfully. Became a symbol of determination, resilience, and success in multiple fields.
