“The Dark skinned Child Labour” Failed Marketing Strategy #7 In April 2015, Kalyan Jewllers a prominent Indian jewelry brand, released an advertisement featuring actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan as a regal aristocrat, reclining comfortably while an underage dark-skinned child held an umbrella over her to shield her from the sun. Critics argued that the ad reinforced harmful notions of colorism and classism, portraying a stark power dynamic between a fair-skinned celebrity and a darker-skinned child laborer. In response to the backlash, Kalyan Jewellers issued an apology and withdrew the advertisement. They expressed regret for any offense caused and clarified that their intention was not to promote child labor or reinforce racial stereotypes.
