A major issue lies in TikTok’s differing algorithms. In China, TikTok’s counterpart, Douyin—owned by the same parent company, ByteDance—promotes educational and inspiring content such as science, innovation, and cultural values. Douyin also limits screen time for younger users, encouraging productive engagement. In contrast, the U.S. version of TikTok heavily promotes entertainment and viral trends, often amplifying mindless or extreme content that leads to "brain rot." Studies show this difference has real impacts: Douyin fosters intellectual growth, while TikTok in the U.S. contributes to declining attention spans and digital addiction. With over 150 million U.S. users by 2023, TikTok not only presents data privacy risks but also enables China to exert influence through algorithmic manipulation and content disparity.
