Trigger warning: “Work 70 Hours a week!” 🙌🙌 Trust me, I detest the L&T CEO’s stupid non-sensical comments as much as anybody else. But, I don't get why people are still bashing Narayan Murthy, completely misconstructing what he said months ago! Let me explain. .. See, I work all 7 days a week. Except on weekends when I work maybe 8-9 hours a day, I put in anywhere between 12 to 15 hours every single day. That’s 80-100 hours a week. I have been doing this for all 5.5yrs of my career, including the last 3yrs when I’ve been married. All because I believe in two important principles 🙌🙌 1> I want differential outcomes in life. And that can only be achieved by putting in differential inputs and efforts 2> I don’t believe in work-life balance. I believe in what Jeff Bezos calls work-life harmony (only works for people, who have managed to build a career around stuff they love doing incessantly) .. Outcome? -> I spend significant hours a day working on three things I enjoy more than any person I know, and want to be the best in the world at -> I am practically playing 80% of the time when I am working. And thus, if I am not working, that is when my life balance goes into disarray -> And this keeps me happy, and always in the best of state to my family, bringing in good money and a satisfied sleep in the night Most important of all, it keeps me growing faster than most people in my space I know. .. And this is why I also agree with what Narayan Murthy said months ago - “The youth should be working 70 hours a week.” Did he say that all of those 70 hours a week have to be for your employer, who may or may not be paying you rightly for it? No. Somehow everyone tweaked his words to hear, “work 70 hours a week for Infosys” when he did not say that ever at all. He just said, make time and determination to work at least 70 hours a week! 🙌🙌 I don’t know, what wrong he said? .. See, everybody wants differential outcomes for themselves. But, is everybody putting in differential inputs? Because, if you ask people who have done that for a sustained period and not given up. They just can't go back! Cuz, they have tasted the outcomes, and they enjoy it all so so so much! .. And I may be from that rare bunch who is lucky to be doing what he loves so much. But, ask any FIRST-GENERATION successful person 🙌🙌 -> They did work like obsessed missionaries dedicated to their dreams, putting in differential inputs -> They know, you work hard, apply the brains, and do it on a sustained basis, that is how you succeed in any walk of life And that's all Narayan Murthy asked the youth of India to do. And he is not someone who just said things. He effing did it! ..
