Brian Chesky credits AirBnb's success to an essay Paul Graham wrote in 2008. If any founder dedicatedly focuses on the six principles that Paul mentions, it will blow off their startup. The secret to startup success lies in six principles. Let me explain with AirBnB's example. 1. Simple solutions: In 2007, Airbnb started with air mattresses and a basic website. 2. Overlooked problems: They solved the gap in affordable lodging during peak events. 3. Real problems: Cost-conscious travelers needed affordable stays, and hosts wanted extra income. 4. Informal delivery: They welcomed guests personally, used Craigslist, and even sold cereal to raise funds. 5. Crude Version 1: Their first version included air mattresses, homemade breakfasts, and a simple site. 6. Rapid iteration: They kept improving—adding photography, reviews, insurance, and more. Success is about starting small, solving real problems, launching quickly, and constantly improving based on feedback.
