I’ve been a fool to have been buying medicines from all sorts of places all this time 🙏🙏 I have a Jan Aushadhi Kendra just 150 metres from my house, and I never knew what makes them so special. And based on what I have been able to learn another 1.5yrs down, these could really change the way medicine sales happen in India. Let me explain in depth! .. Went to that Jan Aushadhi store near my home 3 days ago with a prescription. -> A medicine with MRP of Rs 149 was being sold at Rs 49 (67% discount) -> Another one with an MRP of Rs 54 was available at Rs 20 (63% discount) -> And, another one with an MRP of Rs 239 was available at Rs 112 (53% discount) .. The vendor shared, that the Govt subsidises these medicines to ensure affordable access 🙏🙏 Yes, for many of the medicines, one does end up buying the generic ones. Nonetheless, the price differential is a massive one! .. As on date, there are ~13k such outlets pan-India. But, the target is to hit the 25k mark in by the end of FY26, meaning in about a year and a half. That translates to the opening of about a store every hour 🙌🙌 This is amazing! .. And as I learned this, I dived in further. That’s when I came across a Govt of India release, where it had shared an interesting stat. As of December 2023, the Govt was operating 10k such stores, which had sold medicines worth Rs 1.2k crore against true value (MRP) of Rs 8.7k crore! That’s a massive saving of 86% for the commonwo/man! 🙏🙏 .. But that drew my attention to the real impact! Consider, how big a dent this could be in the sales from branded medicine sellers, including those e-commerce giants. The growth of Jan Aushadhi Kendras could possible boost the consumer demand for generic medicines, which could push the local medicine shops and those e-commerce majors to stock up more of those. And that will be the real impact of this Govt initiative a few years down, at least the way I see it. What do you think? Do share in the comments, did you know this?
