From Giant to Tragedy: Toshiba's Fall Toshiba's downfall happened because of a series of major missteps & internal problems. It all started in 2015 when the company was caught overstating its profit by $1.59 billion over several years. This wasn't just a mistake—it involved high-level management & showed serious issues with the company’s transparency and ethics. It shattered trust in the brand & things just went downhill from there. But that wasn’t all. Toshiba also got involved in a scandal with Japan’s trade ministry, where they were found to have colluded to keep foreign investors from having too much influence. This made foreign investors wary of not just Toshiba but Japan entire stock market. On top of that, It made a disastrous bet on nuclear energy by buying Westinghouse Electric in the U.S, which went terribly wrong. The costs of building a nuclear power plant spiraled out of control & when Westinghouse eventually went bankrupt, Toshiba was left with billions in liabilities.
