Did you know in 1980s India was way ahead and producing 800nm chips already in a Fab when China, Taiwan, or Korea had none? The Semi Conductor Laboratory was a PSU setup by then PM Indra Gandhi to make India self sufficient in computer chips. It started with 5 micron CMOS transistors and progressed rapidly. Then a fire somehow burned the whole fab down in the late 80s. Later USSR collapsed, Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated, and India was run over by vested interests of various foreign powers aimed at entering and exploiting its markets. The Semi Conductor dream of India was never revived until PM Modi's Semi Conductor push now in 2020s. We have to learn from the past. For similar foreign adversaries operate and they wouldn't like India becoming self reliant in semi conductors anytime. For now, all good as India is a small player and is not producing high end chips. But it can change in a decade as India innovates and leap frogs. Whoever the Govt then, need to ensure 1980s doesn't repeat again. Most of India's development issues is not because of local politics but geopolitics and India's flawed foreign policy since Independence is my strong opinion.
