This is winding up the power of turbines, and then some. A Chinese company says it has installed the "world's largest single-capacity floating wind turbine platform," a gargantuan apparatus that can generate 54 million kilowatt hours of energy per year and withstand winds up to 161 miles per hour. Yes, winds over 160 mph. And the company says that by "turning into the wind," it can harness the full power of severe weather. That's in sharp contrast to most existing turbines, which are forced to shut down when conditions become extreme. If this can be scaled up successfully, it could be a valuable asset in a world buffeted by stronger and more destructive storms.
