I think , The problem of religious or communal discrimination stems largely from the scarcity of resources (caused by a series of invasions) and the unequal distribution of power among certain elite groups (Brahmin and Kshatriya superiority - not a significant problem now but it was for many centuries) and, lastly, the unquestioning mindset of not questioning conventional beliefs. Buddha questioned every aspect of the wrongly prevailing beliefs in society, but what he and his followers received in return was violence from some orthodox Hindu elements in India (though point about violence or "genocide" from Hindus against Buddhists may not be entirely accurate - some degree of violence also came from Buddhist groups at times, contradicting the religion's teachings). It is not the result of just politics; it is rooted in ourselves.
