Improving Latency (March 7, 2024): • Starlink engineering teams have been focused on enhancing the performance of the network. • The goal is to deliver a service with a stable 20-millisecond (ms) median latency and minimal packet loss. • In the United States, median latency has been reduced by more than 30%, from 48.5ms to 33ms during peak usage hours. • Worst-case peak hour latency (p99) has dropped by over 60%, from over 150ms to less than 65ms. • Similar improvements have been made outside the United States as well 3. Direct to Cell Service (January 10, 2024): •Starlink successfully sent and received text messages using T-Mobile network spectrum through its new Direct to Cell satellites. •Overcoming challenges like seamless handoffs between satellites and accommodating Doppler shift and timing delays, Starlink provides standard LTE service to cell phones on the ground.
