Day 2 of posting one law each day from 48 laws of power Law 2 : Never put too much trust in friends, learn how to use enemies.: 1. Be wary of friends, as they can become envious and turn against you when you become too successful. True friendship is rare. 2. Instead, learn to keep those who are openly opposing you closer. Your enemies can inadvertently serve you by keeping you alert and cautious. 3. Make your enemies your allies and benefit from their skills. Once they are on your side, no one will expect them to betray you. 4. Play people off against each other to consolidate your own power. Encourage rivalries among your enemies. What's your call to this rule?

Ultimately, I think blanket rules like this fail because human relationships are too complex and contextual to reduce to simplistic maxims. A little skepticism is wise, but too much cynicism is a self-fulfilling prophecy of loneliness. Just my two cents..

My perspective? Nurture your real friends and be vigilant about toxic ones. But also be slow to make enemies in the first place. Kill 'em with kindness and try to make more allies than foes through competence and integrity. Though you can't avoid all conflicts, minimizing unnecessary antagonism is better than paranoia.
