No hike since 1.5 years and no hopes in the coming 6-8 months. I work for a startup in HSR and when I joined, I remember everyone was happy with their hikes and they were regular but just 2 months into my joining, the market crashed and we have been trying to raise for a while now but no success so far. Hikes are on a freeze, hiring is on freeze, some folks were let go. I have a good image I guess but not getting a hike is getting to my patience. I believe in the startup and love my co-workers but how long this early in my career should I wait? It’s a duvidha for me honestly to be or not to be. Your opinion? Should I look for a switch and leave? Should I stick around? My family keeps questioning me too. I have student loan and BLR is so freaking costly. There’s a probability to get ESOP’s instead of cash but idk. It feels like home here tbh and I would be very sad if I have to leave.
Exact my replica. Even I didn't received my pay hike from past 1.5years.

Companies always use market conditions as a bail out. Under normal non volatile market conditions appraisal is given based on company and employee performance but the decision makers forget performance during shaky times despite how well the company has performed in the last financial year.
Be happy you are not fired
There are no jobs out there man. Have been applying since 3 months. Sit tight wherever you are.

Fun story- I voluntarily ditched a lot of cash appraisal for years and traded it with Esop’s. I had insane belief that our startup will make it and I will be super rich by 28. Lost it all when the startup shutdown. Don’t depend on esop’s, even experienced founders will tell you that esop’s are never guaranteed. It’s paper wealth that rarely converts. Specially in India, there have been multiple instances of founders cashing out but employees getting nothing for their esop’s. Cash is king in downtimes and in other times too most of the times.
Bhaag jaa bhai, life’s too short to struggle for others. Chup chaap hike le badhiya and leave, there’s no novelty in staying poor. You’re too young, experiment and be happy with you life.
Since you are young, I agree with the above comments that you should try and stay there if possible and if there’s hope that the startup would come out of this ditch. You can ask for more esops tho, that should be the bare minimum they should do if you are valuable.

It’s super rare to be in a non-toxic work culture, try and stay if it’s so good. Might be worth it in the end.

Damn. It’s sad but maybe try relocating and bringing down your capital expenditure on a monthly basis to survive better. I’m saying this only because you like the startup so much and trust me if you switch chances are you might end up somewhere you hate showing up everyday and hate the work culture.
