Leap Finance, a fintech platform for Indian students pursuing higher education overseas, is in talks to raise around $70–100 million in a new round, according to two sources aware of the development. The company is seeking fresh investment after more than two years of its Series D round. “Leap has been doing well for the past two years which attracted interest from several investors including internals,” said one of the sources requesting anonymity as talks are private. “The firm is in talks with at least three new investors to raise up to $100 million in Series E round.” Leap is likely to become a unicorn with this round, said sources. San Francisco-incorporated Leap last raised $75 million in its Series D round led by Owl Ventures with participation from Steadview, Paramark Ventures, Jungle Ventures and Peak XV in June 2022 in a valuation range of $850-900 million. Its exact valuation, shareholding and revenue couldn’t be ascertained as the firm parent entity isn’t registered in India. “The terms of the deal are currently being negotiated with two of the three new investors and Leap would finalise lead for the new round in a few weeks,” said another source who also wished not to be named. “It’s seeking $1 to 1.2 billion valuation in the Series E.” Sources assert that Leap has grown multi-fold since its Series D round. The firm enables educational loans for students keen on pursuing education in overseas universities. It offers test prep apps for IELTS, TOEFL, SAT; admissions and visa counseling as well as financial offerings through LeapScholar, LeapFinance, and Yocke. It also assists with international bank accounts, credit cards, and money remittance. “The new round will be a mix of primary and secondary capital, and some early investors including angels may take partial or full exit from the company,” said the source quoted above. Leap has declined to offer comment on the story. Queries sent to Owl Ventures, Jungle Ventures, Steadview and Peak XV did not elicit any response until publication of the story. The five-year-old firm has raised $175 million until Series D round and claims to have funded more than 3,000 students since 2021. It largely focuses on institutes in the US, Canada, UK and Australia. While edtech startups have been struggling to raise funds for the past couple of years, overseas education-focused finance platforms have cornered decent funding during the period. As per data compiled by TheKredible, Leap and its competitors such as Auxilo, Avanse Financial, Financepeer, Propelld, Grayquest, and Eduvanz collectively cornered around $500 million in the last 24 months. The strong preference to study abroad for superior exposure is a significant growth driver for companies like Leap, Leverage Edu, and CollegeDekho. Incred, a prominent player in the overseas educational loan space, reported that such loans accounted for 21% of its total disbursal in FY24. According to InCred’s founder, Bhupinder Singh, the growth prospects and increasing awareness in this segment have contributed to its [overseas educational loan] rapid expansion.

Sources assert that the talks are in an early stage and it may take a quarter to materialize. If the deal gets through, Spinny would be the first used car platform to raise a new round since late 2021. As per sources, its valuation more or less remains unchanged in the potential round. Market analysts point out that Spinny has emerged as a clear leader with a large delta in the used car retail space as the company appears to have cracked demand first transaction model. It has achieved this on the back of one of the lowest consumer acquisition costs and better gross margin. The Gurugram-based company also scaling auction-based verticals for dealers and car-financing businesses. Most of the money from the new round is likely to be deployed to grow the lending biz, said sources. “Spinny sells close to 7,000 cars every month with an average transaction size of around 6 lakhs. It also sells around 5000 more cars every month on its B2B auction platform,” said the source mentioned above. Queries sent to Spinny, Accel, Elevation and General Catalyst did not elicit an immediate response. According to startup data intelligence platform TheKredible, Spinny has raised around $500 million to date. Tiger Global and Accel are its largest stakeholders with 14.25% and 13.25% holding respectively. For the fiscal year ended in March 2024, Spinny’s revenue from operations increased to Rs 3,725.02 crore from Rs 3,259.78 crore in FY23​. During the period, its losses reduced by 28% to Rs 590.37 crore.

Waycool, the Chennai-based agriculture supply chain firm, has raised Rs 100 crore (about $12 million) in debt financing from Grand Anicut. This is the first major infusion in the company in the last two years. The board at 1,000 Series B6 debentures at an issue price of Rs 10,00,000 each to raise Rs 100 crore or $12 million, its regulatory filing accessed from the Registrar of Companies (RoC) shows. The debt carries a coupon rate (interest) of 18% per annum with a tenure of 18 months. The company plans to use the funds for ongoing business operations, according to the filings. This debt round is a significant breakthrough for Waycool, as the company has been struggling to raise an equity round. Founded by Karthik Jayaraman and Sanjay Dasari, Waycool buys fresh produce, including dairy products, from farmers and sells them to retailers and restaurants. It also runs private label brands and handles distribution for fast moving consumer goods or FMCG companies. Waycool has raised around $160 million in funding to date from Lightrock, International Finance Corporation, FMO, and 57 Stars, among others. It was also negotiating for more than $50 million which could have propelled its valuation in the range of $900 million to $1 billion. However, the talks did not go through. The firm was valued at $700 million in its last equity round. To cut costs, the firm also laid off 200 employees across departments as the company was eyeing profitability by July this year. Waycool registered 62% growth in its operating revenue to Rs 1,251 crore in FY23 whereas its losses surged by 89% to Rs 685 crore during the same period. It’s yet to file an annual report for FY24. The debt funding for Waycool highlights the scarcity of equity capital for agritech startups. Notably, three companies—Waycool, Dehaat, and Ninjacart—have been close to achieving unicorn status for the past couple of years. However, the sector has yet to produce its first unicorn. According to startup data intelligence platform TheKredible, agritech remains one of the least funded segments in 2024, with over 30 startups raising only $150 million by September. This follows a challenging trend, as last year saw just $178 million in agritech funding, a steep decline from $772 million in 2022 and $636 million in 2021. On Monday, agritech firm Greenikk shut down its operations due to operational challenges.
