India’s Right to Disconnect sounds great on paper. But India doesn’t work on paper. Over 90% of our workforce is informal. Daily wage workers, gig workers, helpers. Most don’t even know the labour laws that already exist. Expecting them to enforce a “right” is unrealistic. For the formal 10%, policies will come. Emails can stop. HR can step in. But for the rest, pressure isn’t a notification. It’s verbal. “Stay one more hour.” “No work tomorrow if you leave now.” Burnout is real. The intent behind the law is right. But laws without awareness are just ink. If this has to work in India, education and enforcement matter as much as legislation. Rights only exist when people know they have them.
