What to do when an interviewer won’t let you ask questions — a quick lesson I learned today. I had an interview recently where the interviewer asked me: 👉 “If a microservice is taking delay, how would you optimize it. Sounds like a good system design question, right? Except — I wasn’t allowed to ask any clarifying. That meant I had to answer with zero context: no information about whether the delay was from database queries, network latency, external APIs, or traffic bursts. I still tried — mentioned caching, query optimization, background jobs, and even Redis. But in the end, the interviewer simply said: “We’d use Kafka.”

Here’s the problem: without context, there is no single right answer. If the DB is slow → you optimize queries or add replicas. If downstream services are slow → you add timeouts or circuit breakers. If traffic is bursty → you might introduce Kafka for buffering. Each solution fits a different problem. Jumping to “Kafka” without clarifying is like prescribing medicine without diagnosing the patient.
