Why India Is not Making Games Like China or America Everyone talks about how gaming is blowing up around the world the industry is already over 200 billion dollars and titles like Call of Duty, Fortnite, PUBG or Genshin Impact are household names. Most of these games come from the US or China when it comes to India even with such a huge number of players we still do not see any big game that stands out globally money is the first roadblock building a world class game needs crazy levels of funding tencent in China spends tens of billions just on gaming compare that with India’s total investment in 2022 only around 2.8 billion with that gap our studios end up focusing on quick mobile games instead of massive projects that take years to create. Skills are another part of the story america has been making games since the 80s and China built its system in the early 2000s india is catching up late a lot of our talent goes abroad or works for foreign companies while local studios stick to outsourced projects or small mobile releases. Then there is the market itself India has over 500 million gamers but nearly all of them play on mobile because it is affordable so companies keep building casual mobile games with ads In contrast the US and China had strong console and PC markets early on which gave them room to build bigger experiences. Rules do not make it easy either China despite having strict gaming laws still supports local studios the US gives developers freedom to experiment in India sudden bans or policy changes scare away investors. Culture matters too in places like the US or China gaming is treated as a serious business and export industry in India many still call it “timepass” That thinking slows down the growth of local studios. Still the future is not hopeless india’s gaming market is set to touch 8.6 billion dollars by 2027 with young players, better internet and rising interest in creative jobs the base is already there what is missing is big money, stronger training, stable rules and a change in how we look at gaming until then India will mostly remain a consumer of games not a creator on the global level.
